Conducting a Research Study

The one research study that I would conduct is a study of the impact that television has on children – mentally, emotionally, and physically. Within this study, I would focus primarily on children who have parents of the upper-middle class, who have very busy life styles. I would want to find out the percentage of children who have television take up most of their free time outside of school. I want to find out how many of these children have social issue concerning their ability to communicate with others and hold friendships and/or are in the percentage of obesity.

The positive contributions of this particular study would be the result of having the upper-middle class realizing the negative impact that television has on children. I would hope that this would positively influence parents to have their children become active and involved in society.  I understand that these studies have already taken place but I think it would be interesting to be able to conduct a study and choose the children to focus on relating to their mental, emotional, and physical abilities.

  1. Kaitlyn,

this would be a great research topic especially in early childhood. I have some 4 year olds in my class that talk more about video games than knowing their letters or numbers. It is funny you mention this because I have notice in my room that the children who play video games obsessively often do not know how to pretend play or join in a group activity such as tag etc...Very interesting topic!

  2. Kaitlyn,
Interesting topic wonder why you chose just the upper middle class though? I feel that a lot of families use television as a form of a babysitter. I think that all classes need to know that children need to be active in order to learn and grow and the television is not an active choice. However, we do need to start somewhere so if you can get the upper middle class families to turn off the television and do something active then we are well on our way.

  3. I think a study on the impact that television has on the social skills of children is needed. Television portrays unrealistic social scenarios and if this is what our children are learning to base their social skill development on, we will be creating a generation that cannot build and sustain meaningful, realistic relationships. A lot of programming right now is very dramatic and I am sure it must be having an impact on their emotional development as well.

  4. Kaitlyn,
I really like your topic. I have to ask why did you focus on just the middle class? Just curious, working with 3 and 4 year old children of very low income homes its amazing how much they know about television programs. During home visits I have taken note that parents sit them in front of the the TV to keep them occupied. I am sure this has an enormous effect on their emotional, physical and mental development. 5. Even though I focused on upper middle class in my blog, I believe that all socioeconomic classes choose television as their babysitte and the television has a negative effect on the child. I focused on this class because I have experience with many families where I see this happening.
